儘管預期政府關門將對徵人造成衝擊，美國10月新增就業仍達20.4萬人，為華爾街預估的二倍。

美國勞工部周五公布，9月與8月新增就業人數亦往上修正合計達6萬人。

10月失業率上升至7.3%，可能係受到政府關門影響，9月為7.2%。

根據政府統計失業率方式，聯邦員工亦歸類為失業人口。

10月裁員最多行業為零售業，酒吧與餐廳。假日季節，低薪企業徵人傾向暫時增加。

然而，美國勞工部公布，除了政府部門外，幾乎每個行業就業人數均增加。

就業人數意外大增，讓人懷疑是否政府關門扭曲了政府正常搜集資料的程序，但勞工部官員說，對調查的回應比例似乎正常。

8月與9月就業人數往上修正，顯示經濟似乎較預期強勁。

接受MarketWatch調查的分析師平均預估，美國10月新增就業為10萬人。

9月新增就業由14.8萬人上修至16.3萬人，8月新增就業由19.3萬人上修至23.8萬人。

平均每小時工資上升2美分至24.10美元，平均每周工時持平於34.4小時。
